The valley and South Hill

Puyallup splits into two broad areas. Downtown and the older neighborhoods sit in the Puyallup River valley, around the fairgrounds. South Hill rises above them, with large subdivisions along Meridian (SR 161). We come in from Tacoma, about 9 miles to the northwest, on SR 167 or SR 512.

Older valley homes

Many houses near downtown were built in the early and middle parts of the 20th century. Over the years, owners added forced-air systems, finished basements and extra rooms, so the ductwork can be a patchwork of old and new. Dust and debris tend to gather where sections meet and in long horizontal runs.

South Hill subdivisions

South Hill is mostly newer construction: two-story homes, attached garages, and furnaces or heat pumps feeding long runs to upstairs rooms. Here we often see:

Heavy dust at the central return in the hallway or family room
Lint and fine debris along the upstairs supply runs
Upstairs laundry rooms with vents exiting through the roof or a side wall

Upstairs dryer vents are worth a closer look. They are longer, they often go up instead of out, and lint has more places to settle.

Rain, river fog and spring pollen

Puyallup gets the long wet season of the South Sound, and fog can settle in the valley on fall and winter mornings. Damp air slows the dryer and adds moisture to lint in the vent.
